Q1 : I have lost lot of money by getting involved with many Network Marketing / MLM companies in the past. How is this different?

Q: What is a Pyramid Scheme? What is a Ponzi Scheme?
A: Multi Level Marketing (M.L.M.) companies (usually in the guise of a Binary Plan or Multi-Level Plan or Matrix Plan) pays you a commission for enrolling new members into its scheme. Each member is required to invest a minimum amount to be part of the scheme. A pyramid scheme uses the money invested by new investors to pay the old investors.
A company or a scheme that has a business model where in you can buy or invest 2 or 7 business heads or business centre's to supposedly give you 2 times or 7 times more income is a clear indication of a fraud scheme in the making. Please stay away from companies offering such business models.
To escape from the purview of Chit Funds & Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act, the company will give some tangible products in return for the invested money. Products might also be in digital form that can be downloaded from internet. A Ponzi scheme (named after Charles Ponzi; the first person officially recorded to have played a large scale investment fraud) also works the same way. These schemes eventually collapse as cash outflows or payouts will sooner or later become more than the cash inflows.
Q: Is Network Marketing a Legal and accepted way to conduct business?
A: Of course, it is an accepted legal system of distribution of goods. Just like there are cheats and frauds in Medical, Legal, Real Estate industry and other profession, it would not be wise or would be unjustified to call the entire Medical, Legal, Real Etsate or other profession or professionals as an outright Scam, Fraud or Cheat.
